I was a pacer for the Halloween Half marathon yesterday. A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to do it as they had some open spots and I thought it sounded like fun, so I ended up pacing the 1:55 group. I really love this course and think that the race could be a great one, however there were several issues that they need to get worked out. First of all I waited in line for about an hour in the cold to get on the bus, and then once we were up there the race didn't start on time and there was a lot of confusion. It seemed like they didn't have enough buses because they were still arriving as the race was starting.

I actually really enjoyed running this race and had a lot of fun, but I was really frustrated because I wanted to go faster and it was tough keeping the pace at 8:47, especially on the downhill. I did get to wear a really cool pacer shirt though and that was fun. :) There were a few people that stayed with us most of the race, but for the most part most of the people either dropped off or went faster. I'm really not sure if I will do this again because I really just wanted to race. It was a lot of fun though hanging out with some of the bloggers and seeing a lot of friends, so that made it a fun morning, and I got a nice hug from Jun.

We came in 3 minutes under our pace, but the course was short. In fact, the mile markers were totally messed the whole race. The race director seemed to think that us Utahns weren't very good pacers because we weren't able to take all of this into account. Haha. I had no idea the course was short and I was going strictly off of my Garmin. I knew the mile markers were totally off. All of the pacers I talked to came in about 3 minutes early.

The worst part of the day though was having to wait in the line for the bus. They only had two buses to take everyone back to University Mall. Lame.

Yeah, there were some frustrating issues, for sure, but I don't think the late buses at the start should have been one of them. Those that were late actually broke down and held up others. What they needed was two or three back-up buses, something I'm sure they'll fix next year. As for the buses after the race, that was just stupid. They should have had 5 times that many. On the other hand, the cars were only 2 miles away. Lots of people just walked or ran back and thought they saved time doing that.

The race did start late, but not nearly as late as almost every other race I've run. I didn't think twice about it.

One of my big issues was that they only had one garbage can at the start. My other thing was the whole getting to the starting line 2 hours early. They didn't need to do that. Overall, the race was well done for only their second year. I think they'll have all of that fixed next year.

Hey, you have to remember that most people aren't as fit as you and don't want to run 2+ miles back to their cars after a race. Believe me, most of the people in that line would not have faired well running any more. The bus issues will probably be worked out next year. I think this race could be really awesome if they work out some of the bugs. I really loved the course.

i heard you talking to pacer sam yesterday about all the pacers coming in 3 minutes early. he said something like "well i came in within 3 seconds of the goal time. the trick is to just take it one mile at a time. if the course is short, you can adjust for that by taking it one mile at a time." i have to say, i disagree with this. if you think about it, it doesn't matter if you take it one mile at a time. if the course is short, the course is short, and you will come in under your projected time. right? i was at 1:53-ish at mile 12, so i thought if i ran a 9:40 mile plus the .1, i would come in right on time. but suddenly the finish line appeared and it threw me off. oh well. it was a fun experience anyway.

i agree with you that it was so, so hard to have the brakes on during that downhill section. you could really fly on this course. it would be fun to run this race again as a non-pacer. maybe next year, if they get those kinks worked out. i was one of the ones that ran back to my car. not a huge deal, but i will say it wasn't the most enjoyable run ever, especially while still in costume. but i can't imagine how long i would have had to wait for a bus. and i agree with jun that there was no reason why we had to be to the start line so early. i spent more time in that tent than i did at church today :)

Allie- Yeah, it was tough holding back on that downhill and when we slowed down it actually hurt my legs more than going fast. So I talked to my friend yesterday that also paced and when we talked about Pacer Sam he said "That dude was on meth" haha.

A hug from Jun? Jealous!

Everyone loves a hug from Jun. Especially when it comes with a tongue in his ear and my leg around his waist. I have a pic to prove it. There are others in the folder to check out too.
