I woke up early this morning to climb West Mountain, which is the prominent peak south of Utah Lake, West of Payson. I took my one year old dog and this would be her first summit.

We started just after 6:00 and we went straight up the Southeast Ridge on a ATV trail. There was only one switchback up to the ridge and it was very steep! There is just about 2,000 feet of elevation gain on this hike, and most of it is trying to gain the ridge. We took a break to watch the sunrise and snap a few pictures.

Once on the ridge we ran into a herd of sheep and my dog was very interested, so I had to keep a tight leash on her. The final push was steep again, and we finally reached the top in 1:15. We had a quick snack, and then I spent the next 5 minutes trying to time a peak jump. I got a few good pictures and we headed down.

The descent was much quicker, we ran the whole ridge and it was a lot of fun, and we made it back to the car for a total time of two hours. This was a really fun hike and I made it home in time to have breakfast with the family. A great way to start my day.

That does sound like the perfect start to the day!

What kind of dog?

Australian Cattle dog (blue Heeler)/Boxer mix. She has the coloring of the Blue Heeler, and the body of a boxer. I really love her look. She was so good on the hike, and I was surprised. The last time I took her out she pulled me everywhere and wouldn't listen to a thing I said.

My dog just dragged me when i tried to run with him. There is definitely some training involved that my dog did not have!

Yep, perfect morning all right. Glad your dog is going to be a good trail dog for you! Wouldn't it be nice to start every day that way? It makes you smile all day long!

Kelli- I find it very difficult to run with my dog. She is always pulling and wanting to stop to sniff, pee and just do what dogs do. Most of the time I don't want to take the time to mess with her because I want a good efficient workout. I need to work on it a little. I will start taking her on more hikes now that she has settled down a bit.

Leslie- For me there really isn't a better way to start the day then getting up early and climbing a peak. I am usually in a great mood the rest of the day. I am so happy the weather looks to be changing. That means I'll be getting out more. :)
