I woke up early to run Mt. Wire again with MatthewVH. While driving to the trailhead it was snowing, and clouds were enveloping the Wasatch Front. I was thinking that maybe we would have some bad weather to deal with, but I wasn't too worried. Matt was waiting for me at the trailhead and it was just getting light when we started. It was cold, but not windy, so it actually felt pretty good.

We started out with a fast hike and I told Matt to just set the pace and go with what felt comfortable for him. He started running after a few minutes and we kept a nice easy pace up to the ridge. After a few minutes we stopped for a bathroom break and what a view we had of the whole valley. We saw some deer on the saddle and then we saw some coming through the gully to the North and there was a really big one moving through and within a minute we saw two bow hunters stalking it. We watched them for a few minutes and both kind of hoped the deer would get away, which it did. Matt said he wasn't in the mood to watch a kill that early in the AM.

The hike up the ridge to the summit was fun. We just talked about future plans and peaks we wanted to climb and what we wanted to get done next year. We made it to the top in 56:00, which was 9 min slower than my solo climb two days ago. It was pretty cold on top, but no wind and clouds were slowly starting to cover the summit. After a few summit shots we bolted back down, running the entire way to the bottom. It was a nice easy pace that allowed us to talk and we had a great time.

Best part of the day was running into Matt's friend Brian near the bottom. Brian has always admired Matt and it was fun to see him light up like a Christmas tree when he saw him. It made me smile. It was a fun morning.

Matt and I are tentatively planning on climbing Wire 5+ times the day after Thanksgiving if any of you might want to join let me know. It will be 20+ miles with some good elevation gain.

Count me in for the quint. I'll be there, for sure. In fact, I might do 6 as I need to get at least a marathon that day anyway. I mind as well keep going till I hit 26+ miles, right? Think about it. Nice job today.

From Scott Wesemann on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 14:01:06 from 75.162.77.185

We talked about possibly doing 6 or more. We will just go as far as we can. It should be a lot of fun. That's cool you can make it.

From Bec on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 15:59:27 from 71.199.12.198

I haven't really followed your blog but it is so exciting! I want to run 20+ with you that Friday. I don't really know if I will be able to keep up with you billy goats. Sounds really cool though.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 16:00:48 from 71.219.65.246

Hmmmm.....that sounds awfully inviting. MAybe we will join you. What if there is snow?

From Scott Wesemann on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 17:43:15 from 75.162.77.185

Bec- I think you could keep up. No worries. The trail is easy to follow and the great thing about this run/hike is you can keep all of your food/fluids at your car and take a nice break every lap. You could do as many laps/summits as you feel comfortable with. Join us if you want.

Kelli- You guys should join us. I have climbed this peak all year and snow won't matter because there is always a nice beaten path to the top. The only way it would be an issue is if we had a big storm that day, and if that happens we would likely move it.

As usual, I think the mountain will be in awesome shape. Most likely weather will be perfect and we'll have a great experience.

Let's plan appropriately so that we can actually enjoy it. No wicked-early start time and let's take lots of yummy food and warm things to drink. We should literally make this a party and get a whole crew out there attacking that mountain.

From MatthewVH on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 18:39:58 from 67.2.88.234

I knew you would make a comment about "Brian", the friend I've never met. I can't deny it was the same guy we've seen up there, but from my vantage on your left, that Festivus Tree lighting was all for you. You two fellas have a future together, I just know it.

Twas a fun time again. Looking forward to making sweet love to the mountain all day on Black Friday.

From Scott Wesemann on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 20:50:03 from 75.162.77.185

Jun- I agree. It would be fun to get a good group doing this.

Matt Matt Matt- I'm sure Brian will be ready for some sweet love...Make sure you invite him for our attempt.

From Dorsimus on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 21:47:43 from 75.162.152.180

Sounds like a nice run.

Wow...I'd really like to try and be there for the 26th, I'll have to see what the holiday schedule looks like.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 00:58:28 from 71.219.65.246

Um, did you say mountain? Maybe I should pass. But, you also said food...so I will be there. Scott and I are in. You will have to let us know how to dress appropriately and what to bring. How long will this 20-30 miler take? ALL DAY??? Or is that just for slow people like moi?

From jun on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 01:04:25 from 63.224.110.85

Kelli, yes, it is a mountain, but not a big one. It is only steep for about a mile and the rest is runnable. How many laps you do is really up to you. Each lap is about 4.5 miles with about 2,000 ft of vert over 2 miles-ish.

When we have an idea of how many people might show up I'll start working out how to put together the breakfast. Maybe I'll have my scouts do it. You can plan on Scott and/or myself sending out emails and posting notifications on our sites with details. This could be a HUGE ton of fun.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 01:12:55 from 71.219.65.246

Scott is behind me saying "Cool" but I am saying something not as bloggable.

I can walk up it and no one will think less of me, right? Heck, I may have to walk down it, too.

From jun on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 01:38:01 from 63.224.110.85

For most of it everyone will be walking up. Running down is much easier. You go down differently than how you come up. It isn't nearly as steep and actually very enjoyable. Next week we'll make sure you know the route and we set proper expectations. It should be nothing more than a ton of fun.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 21:45:11 from 71.219.65.246

I trust you guys, kind of. What you say is easy is probably going to do me in but I am semi-tough. LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!!!! Really.

From Scott Wesemann on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 23:59:07 from 75.162.77.185

The first mile is a little steep, but you can run for sure. Then the ridge gets steep for 1.2 miles to the summit, so everyone will most likely be hiking up that. You can run down the whole way. As far as mountains go it is pretty easy. It is just some good steep fun with a killer view. It will be fun to get a good group together.

From Bryce on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 02:05:46 from 64.75.228.130

Hey, I might try to make it down for a few laps. Sounds fun.

From Bryce on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 02:07:14 from 64.75.228.130

Oh, and a Kelli, same Kelli that killed Goblin Valley, you got this no problem, see you there.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 09:22:13 from 71.219.65.246

Hmmmm, thanks for the confidence. Honestly, just tell me there are cookies at the top and I will make it!
