Had the best run/hike of the year so far this morning with Jun. My son came into my room last night at 1:30 am barfing all over the carpet, my bed and himself. I had only been asleep for about 30 minutes and with the alarm set for 6:00 I was worried I wouldn't be feeling it today, but I felt great the whole time. We met my friend Matt at the trailhead to Big Beacon (Mt. Wire) at 7:00 this morning and it was COLD. Matt was taking a break from work, and wasn't dressed for hiking, but he is pretty hardcore, so he just came up in his jeans and leather shoes.

The first mile was really cold and the hose on my Camelbak froze and I couldn't get any water. We made good time to the summit hiking fast. We could have run, but we didn't want to leave Matt. We made it to the top in about an hour, and Matt bailed to get back to work. We took a few summit shots, and then decided to go down a different way that would take us over a minor summit and then take us over to the Red Butte summit ridge. The run over to Red Butte was so fun in the well packed snow.

The Red Butte ridge is a little scrambly (not bad) so it slowed us down some and we were soon on the summit while spying several deer (I think we saw at least 50 today). The run down from Red Butte is pretty steep and technical, but a lot of fun. We had a great time and moved really fast down to the saddle, where we decided to take the switchbacks down to the BST.

Once we got back down to the BST it was another couple of miles to the car and by this time it was really hot. My Camelbak finally started working again, and I sucked down some water.

This was an amazing day and I would go back and do that again anytime. The only bad part of the whole hike/run was my nose ran constantly, and I had to keep farmer blowing. Jun was incredibly strong, and considering he ran a marathon+ two days ago it was pretty amazing that he did so well. I will post up some pics and a little video later today.

I just put up a video from our run:

Great report Scott. That was so much fun. Next time we'll be able to move even faster now that we know the route we want to take, although I'd gladly head down the north side of Red Butte into the gardens to add some mileage. So much fun.

WOW! You and yun had a great climb up over Beacon and down Red Butt. I seriously don't know how you run down mountains. The only way I would do that is on skis on a groomed trail! GREAT mountain run and video! :)

Man, Jun looked like a little deer just pouncing down the mountain!!! And did he not have a hat on????

You guys are crazy, were ya freezing??? Was it windy up there?

I was hoping to one day be able to run some trails with you guys, but I can tell you are way out of my league, I would have tripped and fallen on my head.

Hope the barfing has stopped and that no one else gets ill! have a good rest of the weekend.

Looks like it was beautiful up there this morning. Next time you run Wire Mountain I'll definitely join ya.

Uh, that video is misleading. That was definitely not the technical part of the downhill. That was the casual ridgeline Scott was talking about. My form of technical downhill running involves a lot more falling.

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 12:01:09 from 71.219.89.82

Sure, you still can handle the trails. i watched Crockett do the same thing over these mounds of dirt---he cleared it in about 30 seconds and it took the rest of us 3-4 minutes. It takes talent to run with the rocks.

I just added some pics. Yes, it was very windy and cold for the first hour, but after the sun came up we heated up fast. The technical parts of the trail were steep with a lot of rocks/boulders, and Jun was flying down that section. I should have taken some video of that, but I was just trying to catch him.

Twinkies- We should definitely do this one again. Maybe we could make it a FRB day on Big Beacon. Congrats on the new addition by the way. That is awesome!

Those are AWESOME pictures. Looks like you had a blast! How in the world do you guys "grab that much air". Holy cow! Shaun White's halfpiping looks like child's play compare to your mountaineering and soaring. We already know you're mountain goats. If you had wings, you would be eagles!!! FUN stuff!

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 21:33:15 from 71.219.89.82

Haven't you guys heard, white men can't jump?!?! How do you guys get such air on those leaps and bounds?

Looks like a blast, and looks like you were HIGH up there. That might have freaked me out, I am afraid of heights.

Okay, that was awesome! I loved the pictures!!! You guys really know how to have a good time!!!
